Grand Opening - New Moose Lodge Digs - Sat., Sept. 6th
It's official - on Saturday September 6th all Moose Lodge members, their guests, and the General Public are invited to the Grand Opening of our new headquarters up at the Belle Mar Mall. Brian Brocker has donated a hog and free pork sandwiches are planned for all attendees. Come on in, have a bite to eat (food served from 3 PM until gone), check out the changes - and there's always something being added every couple of days - and stay to hear Steve Lang's "Classic Country Show" as he sings the songs that made Country Music (7 PM to 11 PM).

Moose Family Picnic @ Camp Patterson A Success
For two days August 9-10, 2008, Moose members, their kids and families took over the 18 acre 150 bed Camp Patterson facility on nearby Lake Washington. Only 15 minutes outside of Mankato, Camp Patterson's facilities were a hit - sandy beach, watercraft, archery range, ping pong tables, pool table, dining hall, and the outdoor fire ring for roasting marshmellows. Most of the ten cabins were filled and Moose members were the first to use four new 17' canoes that had been brought just hours before we landed. Weather was great. There were no boat sinkings though a kayat was swamped. Paddleboats were great fun. Kids were swimming all the time. Singing around the camp fire ring was something different though the teenagers didn't always like the old songs. The pontoon rides around the lake were a highlight.

Wii Invades Moose Lodge

Thanks to the driving force of Moose bartender Lisa Tscherter, among others who helped fund raise, the Moose Family Center now possesses Wii video device for use with our giant television set. What a game! Very "interactive" even for the older members. Bowling remains a favorite, with baseball, golf, tennis, and boxing as well

LOOM Members Okay Dues Increase

A special meeting on July 9th was called by the Lodge #1414 Board of Officers to decide what to do with dues. At that special meeting the Men's LOOM General Membership voted to raise the annual dues to $45 effective in September, 2008. The existing $30 annual dues fee hadn't been changed for years and action by Moose International triggered a local review which then led to the hike. The existing $30 dues is split between local needs and Moose International: $14 local/$16 Moose International. In September the new $45 in dues will be split: $17 local/$28 Moose International.

On page 46 of the May/June /July edition of the Moose Magazine the 2,000 Moose lodges were notified that the existing $16 in Moose International ABCD fees each man pays is no longer enough. Moose International made a strong argument for a $28 level for the ABCD (A Big Charity Dollar) per-capita fee. The $28 ABCD per capita fee kicks in September 30, 2008, and then it will increase a minimum of $2 annually for the next five years eventually creating a $38 ABCD fee. If nothing was done at the local level the $30 in Mankato LOOM dues for Lodge #1414 members would have been eaten up by the $28 ABCD charge leaving but $2 to finance the needs of the men's fraternal order.

[WOTM Chapter #606 local dues of $20 won't be enough to address the planned Moose International per capita assessment increase for Co-Workers from its curent $12 per year to $20 per year effective September 30th. The Chapter voted to raise its dues in a meeting held in June.]

"Gimme Five" - Support Mooseheart & Moosehaven
Set aside a nickel in the morning and a nicket in the evening, add it up and in 12 months you've got $36.50. Now multiply that amount by 1 million Moose members and after five years (by the end of 2012) it could add up to $182.5 million. The interest from such a sum is subtantial and that amount would provide financial security for Mooseheart (The Child City & School near Chicago) and Moosehaven (retirement community in Florida). A $36.50 gift from each of us is tax-deductible as "Moose Charities" is registered as a charity with the IRS under Internal Revenue Code Chapter 501(c)(3). Mankato's Louis Allen is the Regional "Gimme Five" Chairman and Carolyn Allen is the WOTM State "Gimme Five" Co-Chair. Write a check to Moose Charities for the "Gimme Five" fund and help those nickels add up. Click here to make a donation on-line.
